How do they produce energy? How can they increase energy supplies? What are their pros and cons?
Renewable Energy Website
The Solutions Project
A. Renewable Energy Sources:
1. Biomass
2. Wind
3. Hydro
4. Tidal
5. Geothermal
6. Wave
7. Solar
B. Non-Renewable Energy Sources:
1. Fossil Fuels
Conventional and unconventional
2. Nuclear
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Natural Gas?
Cleanest
of the fossil fuels with 45% less CO2 emissions than other
non-renewable sources and less toxic chemicals like NO and SO2
|
Some
gas reserves are in countries that are politically unstable or prepared to
use gas supply as a political weapon.
|
Contributes
to global warming by producing CO2 and methane emissions.
|
Relatively
abundant compared to other fuels. This is increasing as technology makes
exploitation of shale gas more economic.
|
Dangerous
if handled or transported carelessly.
|
Less
risk of environmental accidents than oil
|
Can
be transported in a variety of ways ie through pipelines or by tankers over
land or sea.
|
Fracking
is controversial. Lots of water is needed. Wastewater and chemicals could
contaminate groundwater and minor earthquakes are possible.
|
Pipelines
are expensive to build and maintain.
|
Produces
competitively priced electricity.
|
Is
odourless and leaks cannot be detected unless odorant has been added to the
gas.
|
Does
not produce waste such as coal ash.
|
The
extraction infrastructure is less harmful to the landscape.
|
It
is lighter than air and so disperses quickly if leaked.
|
An
economic and instant fuel for heating water and large areas, as well as, for
cooking.
|
It
allows precise control and quick results when used.
