Earthquake and Volcanic Eruption April 2015

Chile has seen the eruption of the volcano, Calbuco; whilst Kathmandu, Nepal has just been struck by a devastating Earthquake.

Calbuco has erupted without warning for the first time in over 4 decades. The volcano sits in the southern Andes - a destructive (subductive) plate boundary. The Nazca oceanic plate is subducted below the continental South American plate.

Flights have been cancelled and or diverted due to the ash cloud that has drifted 20 km up into the atmosphere. 5000 people have been evacuated from the surrounding areas.

Ash has rained down. Remember volcanic ash is not like dust, but is powdered rock. Once mixed with water it becomes like a cement, so can be deadly if inhaled. It can lead to lahars if mixed with snow melt or flood waters.



Meanwhile in Kathmandu, Nepal an earthquake of 7.8 has shaken the region. It has caused mass destruction in the towns in the central Nepal region as well as avalanches in the Himalayas. This is the worst earthquake to hit Nepal for 80 years. 

The region lies on a Collision Plate Boundary where the Indian sub-continent (Indo-Australian plate - Continental) is colliding with Eurasia; a Continental plate also. As the Indo-Australian plate continues to plough into Eurasia the Himalayas continue to rise and earthquakes are a common occurrence. 

The location and magnitude of this earthquake, as well as it's shallow focus are the reasons why this particular earthquake has been so destructive.




Over 1000 people have died in Nepal and this is number will probably grow with many wounded and many trapped under rubble. There were also victims in Bangladesh, Tibet and on Mount Everest. 

Immediate responses have included

USA - £0.7 million and a disaster response team have been employed USAID

Other aid has been pledged by the UK, France, India and Pakistan.

2. Which settlements will each hazard effect?

3. Mark the hazard areas onto the map and label them.

4. Add annotation to describe the hazard and their effects.
A. Primary Effects - immediate consequences
B. Secondary Effects - effects caused by the primary impacts
i.social - on the people
ii. economic - effecting money, trade and business
iii. environment - landscape

Note : these can be advantages as well as disadvantages!

You could also categorize these into those that have short term impacts and those that have an impact for a long time (long term impacts).

Radio 4 broadcast on Mount Tambora, Indonesia eruption April 1815 and its effects on global climate.



Mount Mayon in the Philippines erupted. Unfortunately killing 5 hikers on their way to the summit.

'Easy Jet to conduct volcano tests'






The Eyjafjallajokull eruption in April 2010 caused the largest closure of European airspace since World War II, with losses estimated at between 1.5bn and 2.5bn euros (£1.3-2.2bn).
The plane will carry the AVOID (Airborne Volcanic Object Imaging Detector) system, which has been developed by Easyjet, Airbus and scientists from the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NIAR).
Ian Davies, engineering director for Luton-based Easyjet, said: "The threat from Icelandic volcanoes continues so finalising approval of the AVOID technology is as crucial now as ever, to ensure we never again see the scenes of spring 2010 when all flying ceased for several days.
"It means that in the event of another eruption and ash coming down over Europe we'll be able to determine where it is and fly in areas that are absolutely safe."

      • Outer Core




New Discoveries


New research suggests that the Inner Core consists of iron alloy crystals.
They could be up to 10km high - like a crystal forest at the centre of the Earth.

The BBC reported :

Earth's core far hotter than thought

'New measurements suggest the Earth's inner core is far hotter than prior experiments suggested, putting it at 6,000C - as hot as the Sun's surface.' This means that the pressure at the earth's core is 1 million times that of the ocean floor.

So the science of plate tectonics is continuously making new discoveries.

Continental Drift


In 1915 Alfred Wegner, a German geologist, proposed the theory of Continental Drift in his book 'On the Origin of Continents and Oceans' and since then scientists have researched the movements and make up of our planet.

The Plates that make up our Planet.





Plates meet at plate boundaries where they either collide or move apart from each other.

There are 4 main types of plate boundaries.
  1. Constructive or divergent
  2. Destructive or convergent
  3. Collision
  4. Conservative or transform
We will be concerned with Constructive and Destructive plate boundaries and hot spots as this is where  most volcanic activity occurs.
